Who I Am
Who I Am
As a lifetime Democrat, I know what it means to aim for doing things better — it means we work together toward justice, equity, and fundamental fairness. As your Assessor, I’ll continue to work hard to uphold these values, as I have my entire life.
Like many stories, mine starts with my mom. Seeking a better life for her family, she came to New Mexico with her four children and nothing but a few boxes of clothes. She had to sell two of those boxes, but over time she prospered and supported all her children through college. In my case, that included law school.
I am eternally grateful to her and to the people of New Mexico. My family has been given the opportunity to build a bountiful life, to work, to put food on the table, and to prepare my children for their own futures. I’ve strived to give something back to New Mexico by holding positions as Deputy Assessor, Lead Staff Attorney at the New Mexico Legislature, and Deputy Director of Economic Development at the City of Albuquerque. I’ve also volunteered for school supply drives, supported summer law camps for 7th and 8th graders in New Mexico, and worked with nonprofits to assist children with developmental delays.
How I Serve
The mission of the County Assessor’s Office is to provide fair and equitable service to all County residents. The work impacts property owners, homeowners, business owners and renters alike. The property evaluations it performs need to meet rigorous standards for accuracy and equity, since they directly impact taxpayers and provide revenue for our schools, streets, and safety. The more professionally the office performs, the more confident taxpayers feel that their contributions are justified and the greater support there is for schools, streets, fire protection and public safety.
As your Assessor, I’ll advocate for fair and equitable values that help you and your family. I pledge to be:
- An environmentalist, turning the Assessor’s fleet of gas guzzling cars to electric vehicles.
- Pro-labor, supporting the Assessor’s workforce in their right to unionize.
- An advocate for rural areas, ensuring they receive the support and attention they need.
- A champion for subsistence and organic farmers in the South Valley, East Mountains and rural county, working to guarantee the same agricultural tax savings and values as those in the North Valley and Los Ranchos.
- An effective conduit to help veterans get the exemptions they deserve.
- A friend of seniors who apply for a value freeze.
- And someone our small and local businesses can turn to as they work to succeed.
I am eager to get started with this important work. You can help. Please join our campaign for fair and equitable values.
